Hub and Authority Scores in the Context of Domestic and International Airports
As we have studied recently, the Hub and Authority Score Rule addresses the issue of determining which web pages serve as great hubs and great authorities. An algorithm determines these characteristics of webpages that shows these values based on the number of pages they connect to and how important those pages are. The Hub and Authority Score Algorithm was something developed for webpages in the early days of the Internet. However, we can apply this concept to other contexts as well.
Although I did not locate an article precisely discussing the topic of scores in the following context, I did find an article that led in that direction. This particular article aims to explain the connectivity of airports all across the world and how international hubs stand their ground as domestic hubs simultaneously. For example, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is one of the busiest airports in the world. All the while it is an international hub, it serves as an excellent domestic hub. However, there are international airports like Beijing’s that do not have many domestic connections as an airport in the US may have, but instead serve more international locations.
The Official Airline Guide (OAG) provides aviation information and analytical services across many airlines and airports across the world. It has compiled several charts that demonstrate the connectivity index based on the criteria of the highest number of possible destinations during an eight-hour period.
These charts are divided into different categories depending on the region of the world. Although the numbers and calculations used are not precisely Hub and Authority scores, these type of assessments of nodal power can be taken further in that direction. Some issues with calculating such numbers could deal with the high number of connections amongst many airports across the world.
