The Future of SEO

Article referenced in post: http://www.entrepreneur.com/article/251524

The attached article focuses on how SEO has evolved from its origins at the turn of the 21st century. Nowadays, SEO is a lot more complicated – search engine algorithms gauge your page’s credibility based on factors such as inbound/outbound links, page design, social media presence, and content. And gone are the days of websites spamming keywords in their content – modern algorithms are now very blind to frequency as opposed to placement. It also predicts that in the future, machine learning algorithms will become advanced enough to replace the importance of some traditional SEO tools such as keywords.

This article relates to our course because it supports our class discussion about how ranking algorithms and consequently SEO have evolved over time to counteract the constant reverse engineering processes businesses use to improve their rankings. It also ties into our learning of PageRank, and introduced other factors such as social media likes/comments – is a Facebook like the same weight as an inbound link? How about a Facebook share? Are different social media sites counted differently? With this questions, SEO continues to be a hard game to play.
