LinkedIn’s Redesign Could Lead to More Potential Connections

With social media becoming more and more apparent in our everyday life, the companies that own these social media technologies are finding new ways to connect people to one another. More specifically, these companies, are trying to connect a larger number of edges and nodes to one another. This task may seem easy at first glance, but large amounts of money and resources are being put into research and development in order to improve the accessibility of finding new connections. Though some social media companies are constantly rethinking their tactics and design, LinkedIn is just beginning their long journey of overhauling and improving their features. For example, LinkedIn has recently updated and redesigned their inbox portion of their social media platform to simplify and further engage their users. Rolling out to both desktop and mobile devices, their redesigned inbox now sends new invitation requests and suggested connections to the “People You May Know” section. This updated framework more easily allows for potential nodes and edges to find each other and be positioned in the right direction.

Taking connections and communication on LinkedIn a step further, the social media company is also planning to introduce a new messaging product. Coupled with the redesigned inbox, this product could have the potential to increase the expansion of the graph and network of the LinkedIn community by improving the way in which we meet and interact with LinkedIn users. With increased likelihood that users with similar ties will become connected or mentioned in the “People You May Know” section, Tradic Closure may appear as there is a higher chance of new relationships forming in the future. For example, LinkedI user A and LinkedIn user B could have strong ties with one another, and LinkedIn user A and LinkedIn user C could have strong ties with one another. According to the principles of the Tradic Closure, LinkedIn user B and LinkedIn user C will develop a weak or strong tie.

With LinkedIn’s new initiatives, the mission of the social media company has evolved from just adding users to engaging users. Fortune describes LinkedIn’s mission as to “entice users to not only log into LinkedIn more often, but also for longer.” With all this being said, LinkedIn looks to increase the overall value of using their platform over other alternatives. To accomplish their goal of added value, LinkedIn has to take a closer look at the importance of forming new ties and developing stronger ties in order to increase engagement on the platform.
