Hellooo I’m Gabby

Puttanesca w/ penne
My name is Gabby Cappetta, my pronouns are they/them. I’m a senior in CALS doing Interdisciplinary Studies with intent to minor in Community Food Systems. I’m a grower of veggies, mushrooms (mushies), and yeasties. I like cooking and will often spend a dumb long time making meals. Recently I’ve been looking at my food as medicine and paying more attention to the nutritional, medicinal, and energetic properties of my ingredients. I’m looking forward to studying the histories and movements of specific ingredients and crops alongside people as a way of mapping the globalization project and paying attention to the entanglements it produces.

Kaitlyn Blake

Ackee & Saltfish and Fried Dumplings

Hello Everyone,

I am a senior Africana Studies major with a minor in biology. I am currently working towards getting into medical school so I have also taken quite a lot of health, medical and science related classes. Yet, these do not encompass all of my interests (though I would say that these are the interests I would like to pursue in the workforce). I chose this class because I took a class last semester on China in Africa which was very interesting and I thought why not continue this trend. However, learning that we are going to create a cookbook has intrigued me even more.

Maddie Woo

무조림 or mujorim (Braised radish)

Hi! My name is Maddie and I go by she/her pronouns. I am a current sophomore in the Hotel School pursuing a minor in Asian American studies. I grew up in Seoul and attended high school in California so much of my background is East Asian centered. I am extremely passionate about food and beverage (I have a baking business so if you want any baked goods let me know 🙂 ) and I am especially interested in the intersection between Asian food with African influences and vice versa as the two use different ingredients but with similar flavors. I was really excited to learn about new foods and hope to get to know you all!

Amrita Chakraborty

Shrimp Malaikari

It’s lovely to meet you all! My name is Amrita and my pronouns are she/her. I’m a first year PhD student in Comparative Literature located in New York City, where I’ll be participating in the semester remotely. Presently, my interests include feminist, gender and sexuality studies, post-colonial theory and literature, South Asian studies, Latin American studies and Asian American literature. I was immediately drawn to this course due to the connections and parallels between African and Asian cultures, and I’m deeply excited to learn more about these intersections in cuisine, literature and music.

On the personal side, I’ve lived in Queens, NY all my life so I’m excited to move to Ithaca hopefully in the spring and break out of my urban shell a bit! I love music, poetry, fiction, and dance, and I’ve been fairly involved in the online literary/publishing world throughout the past few years. I’ve also lately become more interested in global films, so if you have any recommendations for must-see movies, please do drop them below! Looking forward to getting to know you all over the course of this semester 🙂

Sophia Lee

Kimbap

Hello, my name is Sophia Lee. I’m a junior in the College of Arts and Sciences, majoring in Linguistics. I wanted to take this class because I’m interested in learning about Afro-Asian relations, and being mixed (Korean-Italian), I wanted to explore the narrative of multiraciality/multiculturalness as it pertains to non-whiteness. A lot of the time, discussions surrounding interraciality focus on interactions between white people and POCs, but I wanted to explore a different perspective.

Hi, I’m Vivian

Hong Shao Rou (red-braised pork belly)

I’m a senior studying Government and Creative Writing (poetry). Specifically, I’m really interested in intersections of Afro-Asia within music, like we just saw in the playlist. But also discussions of “authenticity” in Asian music overseas like K-Pop where black culture is often emulated explicitly. And I’m also curious to incorporate poetry with sensorial elements of food. Food is a large emotional component for me, which is why I was really happy to see “tomato & egg” mentioned several times as it is also a favorite of mine 🙂

Sophia Su

Tomato scrambled with egg

Hi everyone! My name is Sophia, and I am from Green Brook, New Jersey. I am a junior Sociology major, and I’m particularly interested in population dynamics. I love everything dairy even though I’m lactose intolerant, which puts me in a rather frustrating predicament. I’m an only child, I have a pet dog, and I also recently adopted a stray kitten I found in my backyard. As for the dish I mentioned reminds me of home, my father always makes this dish when I come home because it was one of my favorites as a child, and I still enjoy it, but I think nowadays he uses me as an excuse to make it for himself (my mother is not a fan, so he never gets a chance to make it when I’m not home).

I’m Leah, Nice to Meet You!

The food that reminds me of home is beef and chicken empanadas.

Hello, my name is Leah Ham. My pronouns are she/her. I am a senior majoring in Sociology in the College of Arts and Sciences. I started out as a Biology major, since I’m planning on going to medical school. But those classes didn’t interest me as much. My future plan is a little more unusual now, but I’m much happier. I enrolled in this class because I was interested in learning more about the connections between the culture of the African diaspora and that of the Asian diaspora. In my free time, I like to draw, bake, and watch cartoons. I also recently started rollerskating! I look forward to meeting you all in about a half hour. See you then!

Hi! I’m Evelyn

Hi everyone!

My name is Evelyn and my pronouns are they/them/theirs and she/her/hers. I’m from Riverhead, NY, and I’m a junior double-majoring in Psychology and FGSS. My interests lie largely in the intersection of those fields, including the psychology of bias and empathy, and the role of media in self-perception. I wanted to take this course in part because it seemed super interesting and unknown to me, and in part because I’m a little bit of a food newbie. I was kind of a picky eater growing up and really find myself missing out on a lot of the joy that others find in food. So I’m looking to expand my palate (both physically and mentally, if that makes sense).

I’m currently living in Ithaca, where I get to do so many of the things I love – go swimming, hiking, sit outside, etc. I also really love collaging, spending time with friends, reading, and journaling. The pandemic has kinda kicked my butt this summer, so I’m happy to be back on campus and taking classes and meeting new people! : )

I’m excited to see everyone on zoom! <3
