Hello, my name is Jane

Hi All! My name is Jane Jackson. My pronouns are she/hers.

I’m a fifth year student studying architecture and minoring in Asian-American studies. I was eager to enroll in this class because of previous courses I’ve taken that had segments about futurisms in trans-Pacific, Native American, and Asian diaspora realms. My interests in architecture lie in the intersection of design, social justice, and community building.

I’ll be zooming in from St. Paul, Minnesota, where I’ve lived almost my whole life. I was adopted from China and moved to the US a little after age one. I will miss being on campus (I was at the U of M the other day walking around and felt an unexpected pang), especially the cooperative housing community and the proximity to nature.

In my house there’s me, my mom, and four pets! We have three cats and a dog. When I’m free I like to read (YA fantasy books are my guilty pleasure), go on walks, draw, watch Netflix, and see my friends. I’ve gotten into gardening this summer, so I’ve been getting parts of bee/butterfly friendly plants from my neighbors to put in our own yard. One of the plants, a parsley, came with a family of caterpillars, so I’ve enjoyed watching those grow big and transform.

I look forward to meeting everyone soon! : )

Hello! :-)

My name is Leadora and I am a junior studying Information Science in CALS. My pronouns are she/her/hers and I am a first-generation Chinese-American. I am from New York City and have lived there my whole life. I love food and consider myself a gastronomer (I’ve actually never used that word to describe myself before). I eat a lot, and almost anything, except raw tomatoes and food with vinegar. I like to cook, too, but don’t do it often. I really love to travel, and my favorite place I’ve been to is Tokyo. Other random things I like are (general-specific): animals, stationery, plants and flowers, street fashion photography, 80s music, the skateboarding/er aesthetic but not actually skateboarding (I’ve been trying… but I’m too scared), vintage shopping in foreign countries, and 90s Japanese fashion (look up FRUiTS magazine!).

My extracurriculars/hobbies are swimming (I was a competitive swimmer for ~10 years and swam for Skidmore College’s swimming & diving team), visual arts (ceramics, drawing, painting, embroidery, photography), and doing things outdoors (biking, hiking, water sports). I recently transferred to Cornell (last semester!), so I sort of feel like a freshman. I am currently back on campus, so that makes the experience less-freshman-y, but it still feels a bit strange coming back to a place I only spent half a semester at. I am very interested in learning about how we as humans interact with other people as well as our various environments (creative, technological, natural, etc.). This course immediately caught my attention merely based on the title, and I was drawn further in after reading the course description. I am excited about this course and to learn, read, listen to, share, and create information and works surrounding the various topics of the course. I’ll end here, but after reading other peoples’ introductions, I will probably reconsider my having shared too much or too little :-D. I look forward to the rest of the semester with you all!
