Working Group

In conjunction with the new seminar “Afro-Asia: Futurism and Feminisms,” I’m happy to announce the inauguration of the Afro-Asia Working Group at Cornell University. It is designed as a collaborative collective where faculty, graduate students, and undergraduates from the arts, humanities, and social sciences can engage in interdisciplinary engagement on the global intersections of African and Asian culture.

While there will be an emphasis on art and relational aesthetics, engagements from cultural studies, political economy, intellectual histories and historiographies are welcome in examining the expansiveness and inclusiveness of Afr0-Asia as a concept. We will be working towards planning a symposium across the Cornell campuses. Topics are not limited to but include the Bandung Conference of 1955, Third World solidarity, WOC feminisms, Asian indenture in the Caribbean, Techno-Orientalism, Afro-futurism, the Chino Latinx experience, Asian hip-hop and reggae, China in Africa, and China in Latin America.

Group members will meet a few times a semester to explore the multiplicity of Afro-Asia and share related work, workshop research, and discuss collective readings. A number of distinguished invited speakers will be welcomed to campus to share their work on Afro-Asian intimacies and political formations.
