This is a different approach to how we have been analyzing networks in class and changing it to how we could be using networks to create profit. Due to the mass incline of social media sites today most people know what a social network is in terms of their network being their friends on Facebook and their friends friends and so on. This article by Techco is looking at how we can approach marketing new startup companies on social networks. An interesting aspect to this that Techco doesn’t address is what the psychology behind why certain techniques work for advertising and others do not. Ultimately we use networks as a way to explain human action, and predict future action so looking into why some techniques work and others do not could be a very interesting aspect to analyze.

As one of the subtitles in the article states, “Social network marketing revolves around communication.” Social networking in general revolves around communication. Links are made between people through communication and the relationships they form. When we look at marketing the marketer is using social media as a way to create this bond between a user and potential customer. If social media is used too much the user gets annoyed with the very pushy advertisements and is unlikely to then purchase the product, however with no advertising the customer does not know the product even exists. With this reasoning sometimes, as the article brings up, it is important put in a little bit of extra money and time to create effective advertising so the connection between user and product can be successful. Then with the popularity of social media networks today the product can become widespread much more quickly and use different theories we have used in class such as strong triadic closure for who to advertise to next. If two strong ties both got the product and both are connected to a third person through strong ties then it is likely that this person would also purchase the product if it was advertised to them. This is how we can use networks today to create a profit in our internet based society.
