Amazon Product Ranks

One of the most popular websites today, Amazon, is an online platform to purchase items. Amazon has roughly three times more search volume for products than Google, and product searches are only growing. Amazon measures success by revenue or gross margin per search as with most companies. Naturally Amazon would want to optimize searches in a way that is profitable. The focus on improving conversion rates means Amazon makes the conversion to spend money easily accessible. One of the ways Amazon optimizes search as the primary way for customers to find products is by ranking its product with an algorithm.

How does Amazon rank its products? Amazon uses different variables like price, availability, selection, and sales history to help determine how the products show up on the page. Depending on how well the search terms match, different products will show in list or gallery view. Amazon will rank the popular product that will generate the most profit for them at the top of each search result. These products with higher sales rank are more visible than those with lower sales. Essentially, the performance factor and relevance factor of the search determines the ranking of the product. Similar to Google, Amazon features sponsored products that are pay-per-click results that show up on the bottom of the page. Amazon also maintains a best sellers listing that reports how well the product sells in a specific category.

We discussed the concept of PageRank in class and how Google calculates how to rank their websites. By counting the number and quality of links, some websites are more important than others. The more important websites tend to receive more links from other websites. Amazon determines its product ranking not on the number of links but rather on the performance and relevance of the search.
