There are a couple different ways to improve your Search Engine Optimization (SEO) that will, in turn, improve your company’s revenue exponentially. Google has become synonymous with searching for links on the Internet, and therefore has a lot of control over which websites get clicked on. But since Google has created a fair system for choosing those links, i.e. not allowing paid links to be at the top without the user knowing they are paid for, the responsibility to make a website appear on the first page of the Google search engine is placed on the owner of the website. “4 Things Every Entrepreneur Needs to Know About SEO” lists the four recommended methods for improving your SEO: On-Site Optimization, Off-Site Optimization, White Hat SEO, and Black Hat SEO. On-Site Optimization is the process of including key words, phrases and tags on your site to cause Google’s algorithm to pick your website as a good fit for the search. Off-Site Optimization includes linking your website to popular blogs and platforms. White Hat SEO is the a more expensive but holds for the longest amount of time, it is the process of back-linking, keyword analysis, and link building which improves the popularity of your site, therefore improving its rank. Lastly, Black Hat SEO is the frowned upon process of using invisible text, created fake pages for back links, and page swapping; if a website uses these technique, Google will ban your website if it finds that you’ve used this method.

In class, we discussed the way in which Google links pages together and scores them in order to give a definitive ranking for search results; This includes hubs and authorities as well as “page rank.” This article describes the ways in which this system can be gamed in order to improve the ranking of your website and therefore improve your popularity and revenue of your company. By participating in these marketing techniques, a company can completely change their business.
