This article talks about how digital networks will deliver next-generation law enforcement tactics and improve citizen safety. The author states that with the integration of digitization and law enforcement with body-worn sensors, body cameras, and vehicle tracking networks the consolidation of this information will be result in a more timely and appropriate response by law enforcement. The author also asserts that a digitized public safety environment goes beyond connecting law enforcement agencies with each other. This digitization and information consolidation now lets citizens report emergencies or suspicious activities via next-generation 911, where text, pictures and video can be sent to emergency call centers and tip hotlines. However, like most government agencies, law enforcement organizations are being careful as they explore next-generation technologies. Looking forward, we’ll undoubtedly see more law enforcement organizations adopting digital technologies and shifting their IT strategy to an enterprise-level approach.

This article connects to the aspect of integrated Information Networks and the World-Wide Web. With the massive expanse of information collected by law enforcement, organizations see the benefit of analyzing and utilizing this information. In class we discussed how they use ideas related to power and centrality in networks. This idea may be useful in the development of these information graphs when determining root causes of violence that law enforcement may deal with. Further, if a citizen reports to the ‘next-generation 911’ centers with information such pictures and videos, this will only add another, extremely useful, component to information analyzed by organizations, leading to a more safe and dependable law enforcement.
