Russian Olympic Rights

Despite the controversy about the Russian Olympians being accused of doping, I personally find it just as unified for the non-accused athletes to compete under a blank flag. With the Olympic symbol shown and the athletes in white, it is almost as if a reminder that they are citizens of the world and not just one country. Although the court has overturned the life-time decision against 28 of the athletes (and 15 who did try to compete after the overturning did not get to), I hope that they are able to still feel the pride that the others competing experienced for their country. I am very excited for the games and know they will do well as individual athletes and citizens of the world, regardless of the name on the flag.

Hydroponic agriculture

This was my first Rose Cafe in the apartment, and the environment is such a nice place to encourage open communication and learning. The lecture itself was very interesting as I was never even aware about the advanced practices of Cornell in our agriculture and dining sectors. It was truly interesting to see how it all works and learn the importance and intricate workings of hydroponic plants, and I actually hope to be able to go over to the greenhouses one to day to see it all in person.

Community collaboration

Into the streets was very hyped up and I was really excited to be a part of it. There was a lot of dedication from people all over more than I even expected. The shows ahead of our shift brought people all together with presentations and lots of hype, until the moment when we all separated. It was all a great way to get together with people in our community not only within our campus and beyond in the greater Ithaca area. The shirts were also a very nice touch to it all.

Sketching on Saturday

Orig posted 10/23/17

Last Saturday, I had the pleasure to join Seema and Sam on a sketching activity in the Arts Quad. Seema, who studies in AAP taught us the basics of one-point and two-point perspective drawing. She managed to make something essentially complicated seem very simple within a five minute explanation.

It was a wonderful time with the weather perfect, providing an opportunity to sit on the grass and hear the marching band in the distance in preparation for Homecoming. The environment repealed any worry and was purely relaxing, my roommate and I had not even a worry about what time it was. Overall, I truly enjoyed this opportunity as it gave me a break I truly needed after another stressful week at Cornell. I hope there can be more like this in the future (even with winter coming ahead!).

Education in nature

What I originally thought would be a simple gorge walk down to the commons and back was actually a very interesting educational session that we had to pleasure to learn about in the field itself. Our instructor was very knowledgeable and I was excited to hear all the specialized information he had to share about not only the gorge history, but about the science behind gorge formations and behind Cornell. I’m very excited to go back to casc and drag my friends to tell them all the information I learned!

Love and Relationships

During the Real Talk we had with Andrew, it was quite obvious that we had all gathered for an awkward conversation. I was surprised to see that so many people were attending, however not surprised when Andrew explained how open-ended our conversation would be and no one was willing to raise their hand.

I think it was awkward not because of the topic itself, but because everyone has a different perspective on love and relationships and no one knows or feels comfortable approaching such a topic unless they know from what angle their listeners are approaching from, or if they really don’t care. And in a room as crowded as that, no one would know where to begin.

I decided to take the latter route, seeming that not many people wanted to speak up, because I’ve wondered about the perspectives of others from things like messaging other genders (where’s the line between friendly and flirty) and relationships versus hookups. Our conversation swerved from very direct, very crude honesty to simple questions about perspective. And we seemed to constantly jump from one topic to the other rather than indulge in something, because again- everyone has different perspectives and are things different things. However, one conversation that stuck with me was when a girl brought up how a relationship doesn’t inhibit a person from feeling attraction towards others. “It’s not like once you start dating someone, suddenly everyone else turns ugly”. But that it is the way you choose to stay loyal in a relationship that differentiates your significant other from the others. Overall, I was glad to have attended this event and hear what others had to say, despite our topics being all over the place. But that was only a direct reflection of how complicated this topic can get.

More to the community than thought

Before attending the session, I thought the “Putting the ‘R’ in Rose House” discussion would be boring talk about what makes a good community. However, the questions that we were presented brought a lot of discussion about what more we want for our community and current issues that we could fix. Things from addressing student dietary needs in the dining hall to our housekeeping and bathroom issues, which have since improved after the wave of the beginning of the year passed by. I’m very glad to have attended this discussion as it helped open up communication to address any issues early in the year and provided a way to learn about the the resources that Rose provides each of us despite being from a series of different buildings under the same name “Flora Rose”.
