PageRank is an algorithm used in the Google Search to rank websites in search results. This is extremely important for Google, as well as for website owners, and for Google Search users. Studies have shown that search users will mainly look at the top 4-5 search results, and will disregard the others. This creates a competition for which websites get those top 4-5 spots, and the PageRank algorithm comes into play. Companies and websites that are interested in maintaining or improving their PageRank then look for ways to increase it. This article discusses several different methods of how to increase PageRank for a website. Suggested strategies include site submitting, guest posting, link exchange, blog commenting, social bookmarking, the use of common keywords, and website advertising.
All of these methods suggested in the article strongly relate to link analysis and web search topics covered in chapter 14. Many of the strategies listed refer to different methods of interacting with hubs and authorities. The authority value of a website is the sum of the hub scores of all pages that link to it. The hub value of a website is the sum of authority scores of the pages that the page links to. Many of the tips given in this article give different suggestions for raising hub and authority values. While hub is important, it’s clear that authority values are more important in raising PageRank.
