Why Your Website May Not Show Up in Google Search

Search engines use a variety of factors to determine how to rank pages and if to show the pages. If your page does not show up on a search engine, it could be because of the following reasons: your site isn’t credible, your page does not focus on the topic you’re talking about, or your website isn’t relevant. A site’s credibility increases if other websites link to them. If other websites link to a website, the authors of the website trust the site and hence the website is credible and hence becomes more popular. If your website targets a certain phrase that you want to rank for, you must make sure that your page is focused on that target phrase. To do this, one can add examples, statistics from studies, or quotes from experts. Finally, if the phase that you want to rank for does not appear in the website, it will not show up in a search engine. You want to make sure that the key phrase shows up many times in the website, even if your article discusses the topic without naming it.

In class, we discussed what methods search engines use to rank or show websites. We first talked about the degree of the website. There is an in-degree and an out-degree. An in-degree is the number of times pages linked to the website. The out-degree is the number of times the website linked to other pages. In dealing with how to rank websites, only the in-degree matters. This is similar to what I had written above about credibility. The more times the page is linked to, the more credible it is. Hence, the page will be ranked higher. Examples of pages with high in-degrees are Facebook, Google, and the New York Times. Other methods of ranking pages include looking at data that other people have looked at and finding keywords in the URL name.
