Netflix Reccomendations
Netflix runs different algorithms to determine what genres may interest a user of the application. They often test the boundaries of what that person may or may not like by suggesting programs that may often not seem related to the higher rated programs the viewer had chosen. This, in part, is to get a larger view as a whole to see what may interest someone, and if the viewer decides that it is not for them, then Netflix will take that into account. Netflix is charged a flat fee for every film, movie, television show, and etc. This helps explain why some blockbusters are not on the Provider. It also explains why Netflix does not really seem to specifically direct you to a certain movie, that is until Netflix recently introduced their own programs that they had produced.
This is similar to the idea of advertisements and click through rates/ values for such products except in reverse. Netflix’s agenda is to make sure that the viewer is happy to use their services, and by spending a large sum on figuring out recommendations algorithms both on what people around you are interested in and globally, they learned to move on from there. Netflix’s employees had to do a lot of work in figuring out who may like what and what would be preferred. Similar to the click-through-method, they needed to get members interested in Netflix Originals without discouraging the viewers from leaving the service. Advertisements/Recomendations needed to be both subtle but also easy to spot. As Netflix expanded it took into account language, quality, and anomalies.
