RichRelevance Introduces Find
As we discussed in class, search engines use a variety of algorithms to rank authoritative pages based on a query, a prominent example being PageRank. However, real search engines are considerably more complex. For one, they constantly have to update their internal algorithms to avoid being taken advantage of by the search engine optimization industry. Another factor lacking with the basic PageRank algorithm is that it only considers information from the network, not information from the user. The past behavior of a user is also critically important in determining the items most specifically relevant to that user’s query. Modern search engines such as Google take behavior into account, as you’ve probably noticed in your day-to-day searching.
Good search is especially important on mobile devices, where screen real estate is small and a few poorly selected first results may severely hamper a user’s experience. Recently, the company RichRelevance released a product called Find to help retailers address poor mobile search. Among its key selling points are personalization, using shopper behavior to personalize search results. RichRelevance claims that Find supports search based on real-time signals (in the seconds range), circumventing delays related to indexing searched items. Find also provides a user-friendly interface, with dynamically adjusting search results and the reasons for displaying each result.
As our lives are increasingly intertwined with the digital world, personalization becomes more and more powerful in search. Find from RichRelevance attempts to take advantage of these user behaviors.
