Google has altered autocomplete suggestions in its search engine after critizations about inappropriate content. Some suggest there are ways to temper with the searching mechanism to manipulate people.
In class we learnt about fundamental mechanism of search engines. One way the engine suggests the most relevant outcomes by determining the number of inlinks and the authorities of these inlinks. Since the number for these inlinks is large across the internet, limit is usually set for these calculations. Google probably uses a complex combination and adaption of these methods to provide the most desired results possible. What has been shown is that people could deceive Google’s mechanism to temper with research results. Therefore, we need also consider designing search mechanism as a dynamic process. The text book solutions are based pages as fixed items in a time period. However, given similar knowledge, there are disrupters in the internet manipulating the data, so that if one was to build the engine based on the book solutions, the outcome is most likely undesirable. Therefore, we could potentially introduce the idea of game theory in this process. Find the best responses in each cases and look for best mechanism for our purpose. Updates is also necessary when the disrupters find new ways around.
