PageRank with Google

PageRank is vital for getting a certain site to the top of the search results on Google or any other search engine. Here we will be specifically talking about Google and Search Engine Optimization (SEO). Google is considered to be the best search engine for users to complete searches on. This is because it provides the finest results to participants because of this PageRank implementation. “In essence PageRank provides a means to determine the value of a website for any given search term or keyword phrase” (Starak).  High quality sites usually gather a higher PageRank, and Google retains this placing it higher in the ranking system. Having outside links that go to your page will increase PageRank and make it appear higher in the systems. This makes sense, because the more keywords you have that link to other sites, the better the PageRank of your site is going to be.  Starak illuminated four variables that he sees to be the most important to worry about when dealing with PageRank:

  1. Incoming links to your site
  2. The relevancy (to your site’s theme) of the pages linking to you site and the PageRank of these pages
  3. The keywords that other sires use to link to your site.
  4. The keywords on your website in particular in places like page titles and headlines.

People crafting articles or sites should think of keywords that will bring in target audiences. Thinking about how to raise their PageRank is the exact thing that new users do not want to do! This article explains the tendencies of how Google’s PageRank system works. In class on October 17th, we discussed the phenomenon of PageRank and outgoing links. Each node simultaneously divides its current PageRank into equal shares across its outgoing links, is the example that was given in class. As I stated above, if more links come to a certain node then strong connections will occur. Links and text are two of the main components talked about in class that go into the ranking of pages. I have realized that when searching on Google, the words that are most common when searching always appear before others. They have tailored my search to be one that is relevant of previous searches completed before that point. PageRank search is just one of the many algorithms that go into an individuals search in Google.
