Date: 10/02/2011 – 1:00pm – 4:00pm. Free and open to the public.

Located in Plantations’ Upper Cascadilla Natural Area, the MacDaniels Nut Grove is a unique outdoor facility on the Cornell Campus where the agroforestry system known as forest farming is practiced. During this open house, you can learn about and practice inoculating a shiitake log, harvesting nuts from tall trees, container production of ornamentals, and more. The event will start at 1:00 PM and run until 4:00. Come anytime, but there will be tours at 1:30 and 3:30 and a hands-on mushroom inoculation activity in between. The site is used for teaching a course called Practicum In Forest Farming during the Fall semester, but it is open to the public any time for self guided tours and scheduled events, like this one. Forest Farming involves cultivating various non-timber forest crops beneath the canopy of an established forest. The crops grown at MNG include shiitake mushrooms, ginseng and other medicinals, fruits, nuts and ornamentals.

Free parking is available at the Mann Library Annex, on Palm Road. Guides will be available to direct you to the nut grove.
