From 2010 to 2015, this effort was funded by a $3.2 million grant from the United States Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture through the Specialty Crops Research Initiative under award number 2016-51181-21062, with an additional $1.7 million in matching contributions from participating commercial partners.

In 2016, the project was approved for an additional $5 million in USDA-NIFA-SCRI funding (award number 2016-51181-25402) to fund the effort for another five years.
