Having routines for daily tasks is beneficial for young children. Routines help children feel safe, secure, and in control of their environment. It also helps them to behave because they understand what is happening and can predict what will happen next.
Family traditions, on the other hand, don’t necessarily happen daily but are equally important. Traditions create a sense of belonging, closeness, and family pride. Family traditions provide an opportunity for family members to spend time together, communicate, and connect with each other. Family values and beliefs are often taught and shared through traditions and are passed down from generation to generation.
The holiday season is a wonderful time for family traditions. One of my family’s holiday traditions is to make cookies. Family members, from the youngest to oldest, gather for a full day of baking, decorating, and eating cookies. So many happy memories have been created, and everyone looks forward to this event each year.
What are your family’s holiday traditions? If you don’t have any, now is a great time to start. Traditions don’t have to be extravagant or expensive; they just have to be fun and provide you and your loved ones the opportunity to spend time together doing something meaningful.
