Snacks to Better Manage Diabetes!

Diabetes can be well managed with diet, but it may be difficult to understand and plan what foods to eat. Many times those diagnosed with diabetes focus on the meals, but forget to incorporate snacks. It’s important to keep carbohydrates consistent throughout the day with both meals and snacks.

Here are some healthy snack ideas you can try:

Snacks with 5 grams or less of carbohydrates:

  • 1 hard boiled egg
  • 1 oz turkey or ham rolled up with 1 oz low fat cheese
  • 10 halves walnuts or pecans
  • 15 almonds
  • 1 cup green salad with drizzle of olive oil
  • 5 baby carrots with 1 tbsp hummus
  • 3 celery sticks with 1 tbsp peanut butter

Snacks with 10-20 grams or less of carbohydrates:

  • 1 small apple with 1 tbsp peanut butter
  • 3/4 cup chopped fruit with 1/4 cup low fat cottage cheese
  • 3 cups popcorn with 20 peanuts
  • 1 oz pretzels with 1 oz low fat cheese
  • 1/2 cup chicken salad with 12 whole wheat crackers
  • 1/2 sandwich and 1 oz turkey or ham

Snacks with 30 grams or less of carbohydrates:

  • 1 English muffin with 1 egg and 1 oz low fat cheese
  • full sandwich with 2 oz turkey and 1 oz low fat cheese
  • 1/2 peanut butter sandwich with 8 oz low fat milk
  • 1 cup unsweetened cereal with 4 oz low fat milk
  • 1 medium banana with 1 tbsp peanut butter
