Kindness Matters

Not long ago, I saw a sign that read “In a world where you can be anything, be kind.” In our very busy world where common courtesy and kindness seem to be undervalued, this message really resonated with me. As we begin a new year and think of resolutions, I encourage you to resolve to be kinder. You might be surprised at the outcome. A recent study found that performing random acts of kindness benefits givers and receivers, increasing the happiness of both. In addition, being kind can reduce stress and improve emotional well-being.

Here are some examples of how you can pay it forward with some random acts of kindness:

  • Pay for a stranger’s coffee, meal, bus ticket, or toll
  • Hold the door open for someone
  • Offer to help carry something
  • Let someone have your space in line, parking spot, or seat on the bus
  • Compliment a stranger
  • Offer words of support to a parent who is struggling
  • Pick up garbage left on the ground
  • Shovel a neighbor’s walkway/rake up leaves
  • Check on elderly neighbors
