Reimagining the Internet

This article describes the phenomenon that we are experiencing as a society, as the population continues to increase in the digital age. In this century, hundreds of billions of pieces of technology will become connected to the internet. Such a massive change in usage will have a profound affect on how the internet works, as well as on the way data is used to direct individuals to the content or information that they are trying to find. It is especially interesting to think that in the future, devices will be even more interconnected with our lives (checking up on our health, controlling all appliances in our houses). As devices are more interconnected, there will have to be new systems for how they interact with each other, and to make sure that the networks that are developed that share large amounts of our personal information are safe. Investments have already been made into numerous research projects and trials to reimagine the internet.
This article relates to our class discussion of the structure of the web. The internet is currently organized in a certain manner. We prominently discussed hypertext in class and how key words and the number of connections between web pages are utilized to find the most likely helpful page for the user. It is interesting to me how these sort of mechanisms will change when technologies such as Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality are connected to the internet in high volumes. How can keywords be applied to an augmented reality experience when a user is walking through an environment and a piece of technology has to use the internet to predict what they want to see based on ratings for a coffee shop (a very specific example). As connections between devices increase, there will be an even higher amount of information going back and forth and more edges between the nodes of the internet. The way it is used today, may have to change.
