Students across the University who want to explore the intersection between horticulture and art can now sign up for the new Botanical Arts focus option within the Minor in Horticulture.
“A Minor in Horticulture with this special focus can complement numerous areas of study,” says Marcia Eames-Sheavly, faculty advisor for the focus. “It can provide a unique balance to other study and strengthen students’ command of the creative process.”
To satisfy the focus’s requirements, students must successfully complete two required core courses for the Horticulture Minor:
- HORT 1101: Horticultural Science and Systems (4 credits)
- HORT 1115: Nature of Plants (3 credits)
In addition, students must complete these three courses:
- HORT 2010: The Art of Horticulture (3 credits, including studio)
- HORT 3250: Intensive Study in Botanical Illustration (4 credits, taught via 3 auto-tutorial courses with occasional meetings)
- HORT 4970: Individual Study (1 credit, a creative capstone project)
“Creative insight is the cornerstone of advancement in science,” adds Eames-Sheavly. “Students who engage in this special focus will be uniquely prepared for inspired and original thinking.”
