Walking for exercise and health doesn’t require a lot of expensive or elaborate equipment. But you just can’t go for a walk in flip-flops. In order to maximize the physical activity and avoid injury, there is some walking gear that is helpful.
Shoes
Comfortable shoes that fit well are essential. When shopping for walking shoes, shop in a store that specializes in athletic footwear and shop later in the day when your feet are the largest. Wear your usual walking socks and walk around the store for several minutes as you try on each pair. The heel of the shoe should be snug and you should have room to wiggle your toes. Shoes with thick flexible soles and arch support are better for walking.
Socks
Socks are almost as important as shoes. Generally, socks made from synthetic fabrics keep your feet drier and retain their shape, softness and resiliency longer. Some socks have extra padding in the ball and heel that help reduce friction.
Clothes
Loose-fitting clothing that maximizes movement and keeps you dry is best. Synthetic fabrics absorb sweat and remove it from your skin. In colder temperatures, wear layers that can be removed as your body warms up. Reflective clothing, like a vest, is necessary if you walk at night or at dawn or dusk.
Hat or Cap
Wear a baseball cap or visor to protect you from the sun in the summer and a knit cap to keep your head warm in the winter.
