In 1993, the General Assembly decided in a resolution that May 15th of every year should be observed as The International Day of Families. This day provides an opportunity to promote awareness of issues relating to families, and to increase the knowledge of the social, economic, and demographic injustices affecting families.
The holiday is acknowledged all over the world in different ways. Some communities may have public exhibitions or discussions relevant to that year’s central theme. Other communities might hold education sessions for young people. Public officials may hold meetings to discuss policies that directly impact families.
This holiday is perfect for those who wish to spend the day with their own families – either the family they were born into, the family they created, or even their extended family. It is also the perfect day for those who wish to raise awareness about some of the many social issues that affect many families today.
