How Do I Find my Purpose in Life

As we advance through life, we struggle to discover what is important. Professor Anthony Burrows, Director of the Bronfenbrenner Center for Translational Research in the College of Human Ecology at Cornell University is studying this question. He found that people need a sense of “purpose” in order to achieve a sense of well-being. That sense of purpose becomes powerful in organizing a person’s day. Everyone needs goals to move forward, but having purpose provides more. It is an overriding concept that propels you through phases of life, directing your intellect, values, and energy.

A “goal” leads to one outcome, whereas a “purpose” defines your outlook and values in everything you do. Whether your purpose is to help a community organization, work for a cause you believe in, become a better spouse or parent, or add to a body of knowledge, your energy and aim each day is centered on that purpose. Such purposes allow us to channel our thoughts and actions into positive results.

Professor Burrows finds many advantages to pouring energy into a purposeful life. People are happier with fewer depressive periods in their lives. They enjoy a longer and healthier life. They derive greater satisfaction with life and possess greater self-esteem. They are less impulsive and more thoughtful about interactions with others.

Perhaps it’s time to do some introspection and determine your purpose. By doing so, not only will you help others, you will also contribute to your own physical and mental well-being.
