In Honor of National Walking Day

Family walking for exercise.

What exercise requires no special clothing or equipment, and can be done anywhere? If your answer is walking, you are correct. We learn to walk by the time we are 12-18 months old, and from then on the world is our oyster, one step at a time!

One benefit of walking is that it is easy to do, barring any injuries. All you need is a supportive pair of sneakers and comfortable clothing. Walking actually helps us to sleep better, especially when walking outdoors in the sun. It regulates our circadian rhythm, reminding our brains that daytime and light are for being awake, and darkness is for sleeping. Think of sunlight and exercise as a helpful aid in preventing insomnia. Walking in the sun boosts Vitamin D levels too. Walking in nature opens our eyes to the beauty around us, and helps in decreasing stress levels and achieving a calmness of spirit. It is a mood and energy booster and increases our sense of well-being. In fact, walking for exercise gives us many of the same benefits of more grueling exercises and is easier on the joints. Since walking is an aerobic exercise, it increases oxygen flow in the bloodstream. This aids in improving blood circulation and helps to lower blood pressure. It also boosts metabolism, regulates blood glucose levels, strengthens bones (since it is a weight bearing exercise) and eases joint movements. Walking also helps the digestive process.

As exercise burns calories, walking briskly for at least 30 minutes will help to reduce weight gain and inhibit Type 2 Diabetes and heart disease. It actually boosts immunity overall. While walking, your mind can be creative, and you will find that mental clarity that sometimes is evasive. Walking is the perfect exercise for one and all, easy to do, with no financial expense. So lace up those sneakers and treat your mind, body, and spirit to a healthy walk each day!
