Nutrition Fact vs. Fiction (Part 2)

Fiction- Buying low fat or diet foods is healthier.

Fact- Buying low fat or “diet” foods is not always best. Naturally occurring low fat foods are exempt to this as they are usually nutrient dense. However, be wary of “diet” products. Most times when these foods are manufactured, something else is added when fat is taken away in order to keep the item palatable. Low fat dressings are usually higher in sugar. Low fat cookies are still laden with sugar, carbohydrates, and empty calories. Graham crackers are lower in fat and contain fiber. Moderation of traditionally high fat foods is best.

Fiction- Fasting periodically is a great way to “detoxify” your body.

Fact- Your body has the amazing ability to regulate and remove “toxins” itself. Certain organs are responsible for this, such as the liver, kidneys, and spleen. Juicing or other fad diets are not scientifically proven to aid in this “detoxifying” process. Again, an overall healthy diet is the best approach to eating and living well.

Fiction- Sea salt is healthier than table salt.

Fact- Through advertising, the fad of using sea salt in products has hit an all-time high. There is little science to back this trend. The sodium content is the same as in table salt, but sea salt can contain other minerals such as potassium and magnesium. Due to this slight difference, the taste may vary and more palatable for some, but regarding sodium intake and management, the two are indistinguishable. If you are concerned with high blood pressure or your health care provider has suggested you stay on a sodium restricted diet, please keep in mind that the salt intake is identical with sea salt. Only the source of the salt is different.
