The Riverhead Alternative Transportation Committee in cooperation with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County and Twin Forks Bicycles is running an essay contest for Riverhead students in grades 5 through 9 to win a reconditioned bicycle and a new bicycle helmet.
The contest will require that contestants write an essay of between 500 to 600 words that demonstrates an interest in bicycling. Essays will be judged based upon content, grammatical correctness and neatness. Word processing of the essay will not be a requirement, but is encouraged.
Here are some themes that students may consider for the essay. Students should limit discussion in their essays to no more than two themes.
- The importance of practicing specific bicycle safety rules
- Reasons for wanting a bicycle
- Promotion of bicycling for personal health
- Importance of bicycling for recreation
- Environmental benefits of bicycling
- History of bicycling in Riverhead
All essays must be submitted to the office of Councilwoman Jodi Giglio, Riverhead Town Hall, 200 Howell Ave., Riverhead NY 11901 for judging by March 31, 2014.
