Bohemian Rhapsody is Back!

One of Queen’s most famous songs, Bohemian Rhapsody is back on the Hot 100 taking the number 33 spot. Due to the recent release in November of the movie of the same name, Bohemian Rhapsody, that details the life of Freddie Mercury and the rest of the band, interest in the titular song has resurfaced as well. How the song gained popularity in the social network so quickly can be explained with the Cascade Model.

Visualizing a social network where the vast majority of nodes, people, are not listening to Bohemian Rhapsody concurrently, it is likely that prior to the phenomenon there were a few nodes that already were. A few reasons why they had not managed to cause a cascade is either they are not highly influential nodes, or the release of the movie increased the social payoff for listening to the song. The movie caused new nodes to become early adopters of the song, and through them some neighbors most susceptible to switching also adopted to listening to the song as well. As the q value or fraction of adopters increases the more stubborn nodes also end up adopting the song as well, and this creates a cascading effect throughout the social network. It remains to be seen how much of the network will eventually adopt Bohemian Rhapsody, as it is unlikely it will result in a complete cascade considering the existence of non social-influencer nodes and super dense clusters of nodes.
