Mindful Eating: Part 1

Mindfulness means being fully aware of what is happening within and around you at the moment. You can practice mindfulness during any daily activity, including eating.

Have you ever been snacking out of a bag while watching T.V. and eaten the entire thing before realizing it? Everyone has their favorite snack to eat with their favorite movie or T.V show, but do we even taste the food when we are distracted?

Was it crunchy? Salty? Sweet?

When we watch TV, we are relaxed. We separate ourselves a little bit from our routine, our problems, and maybe even what’s happening around us. Relaxation is necessary, especially after the busy days, but if you want to enjoy your food more try these three tips:

  1. Slow down and enjoy your food!
  2. Pay attention to the flavor! If you have children, try talking more about the flavor. Ask your kids what the apple tastes like, or how they might describe the texture of sweet potato. Share what you think too!
  3. Try turning off the TV to notice the colors, smells, flavors, and textures of your food.

I’m not saying that you should never eat pizza in front of the TV, but try to incorporate more mindful eating into your days. Choose one meal this week and try some of these tips to get more out of the delicious food that you are eating!

Share with us your tips for eating mindfully!
