Summer is over and children are back in school. During this time of transition, family mealtimes are most important. They give parents and children alike the time to decompress, share stories with each other around the dinner table, and discuss their new routines. Research consistently shows the positive impact family meals can have. Take advantage of this time to also encourage healthy eating.
The beginning of fall is harvest time on Long Island. That means it’s the best time to enjoy the last of the delicious produce our local farms offer. The most nutrient-dense produce include apples, pears, parsnips, sweet potatoes, Brussel sprouts, and kale. Buying these foods not only helps support local agriculture, it also teaches our children to eat healthfully by consuming foods which are “in season”. Pair any of these super foods with a lean meat and whole grain, and you have an excellent, nutrient dense meal. Get the kids involved; either by setting the table or helping in the kitchen. The entire family can prepare together for a wonderful family dinner.
