Sustained trap catch (swd in traps two weeks in a row) was reached on Monday in Clinton county. A single female SWD was trapped in a drowning jar trap in a blueberry planting on July 11.

Across the state, many SWD-susceptible crops are currently being harvested. Trap catch numbers have stayed low at all locations, but don't let your guards down until all the fruit is off the planting.

In Essex county, 4 male and 3 female SWD were trapped in drowning jar traps in a raspberry planting. In Washington county, 3 female SWD were trapped in a drowning jar trap in a tart cherry block, AND 1 female was trapped in a drowning jar and 4 males on a sticky card in a blueberry planting.

Half of the twenty two counties where we are monitoring for SWD are now at sustained trap catch.

The first SWD for 2022 from Chemung county (a single male) was trapped today July 7th in a blueberry planting. This is two months after the first trap catch overall in the state, and leaves three of the twenty two counties in which we are monitoring without a single trap catch yet this season.

Thank you to Liz Alexander for servicing this trap.

On Tuesday July 5 we reached sustained trap catch in two more counties: Onondaga and Tioga. In Onondaga, 2 females were trapped in drowning jar traps in a blueberry planting which is currently open for U-pick. In Tioga county, 3 male and 3 female SWD were trapped in drowning jar traps in a blueberry planting which will be ready to pick next week.

Many thanks to Anya Osatuke for servicing these traps!

Sustained trap catch was reached in Schuyler county on June 28th, with 2 male SWD found in each of a raspberry and a blueberry planting, both on red sticky traps. The raspberries are ripe, which the blueberries are beginning to ripen, but are still green.

Thank you to Anya Osatuke, Harvest NY, for servicing these traps!

We reached first trap catch in both Washington and Rensselaer counties today.

In Washington county, 2 males and 1 female SWD were trapped in a cherry orchard, in both the sticky trap and drowning jar traps.

In Rensselaer county, incidentally, 4 male and 1 female SWD were trapped in a drowning jar trap. A single SWD was found at this farm two weeks ago, but because they were not trapped in consecutive weeks, it is not yet technically at "sustained trap catch".

Sustained trap catch has been reached in Orleans county today June 27th, in both a raspberry and a cherry block.

We also trapped multiple SWD in Niagara county, in both cherry and blueberry plantings. These do not technically count as "sustained trap catch", because the previous catch at these locations was on June 1st. However, it is a definite indication that SWD is present and breeding in Niagara as well as Orleans county.

Keep your fruit covered.

The first SWD of the year was trapped in Tioga county on June 26th. A single male was trapped in a drowning jar trap. The trap was located in a blueberry planting, and the fruit in the planting are beginning to blush.

Thank you to Gary Phelps for servicing these traps!

We reached sustained trap catch in Albany county today. That means that SWD was found in the trap both last week and this week, and is presumed to be present and breeding in the planting.

The traps were set in a raspberry planting, which is currently bearing ripe fruit. Both male and female SWD were trapped in the drowning jar and sticky traps. Thank you to Natasha Field for servicing those traps!

SWD is now showing up fairly regularly in traps in many of the counties in our monitoring network. Best management strategies were covered in a post last week.
