Grad student do Virtual Judy’s Day: CALS Field Note Article and Radio Interview!

Earlier this Fall, Specht lab graduate students, Heather, Clarice and I help put together an online version of  Judy’s Day Plants. Judy’s Day is biannual, family friendly event, that invites the Tompkins county community to the Cornell Botanical Garden to learn all about plant. Two year ago the lab participated in full force for  all sorts of fun activities. Due to the pandemic it was canceled this year but Ray Ludgate, a coordinator at the garden, enlisted us to helped with a scaled down version for K-6 kids online. The course played on the theme of Judy’s Day, Plant Have Families Too! Each week, student learned about plant families and learned to identify them by their morphological features. They were asked to go find representatives in their back yard.

To aid in their identification, Clarice used their awesome artistic abilities to generate an illustrated guide for the students. Heather, Jesus and Ray lead class discussion and instruct student on what to features to look for. To learn more about the course, Heather, Ray and Jesus did an Radio interview with WRFI. Additionally, we put together an article for CALS about teaching over Zoom! Click on the respective images to get linked to the interview and article!
