Google Vs. Bing

The author of “So I put Google and Bing in the ring: Guess Who Won?”, Chris Matyszczyk, decided to take the “Bing it On Challenge” that has been highly advertised on TV for the last couple of months.  He explains which search terms he choose and why, and then talks about the results.  He continues on to explain why he felt that one result was more superior to another or why he thought a draw was necessary in some cases.  In the end Google ended up winning because when Matyszczyk searched “reasons to live” an article came back that entailed “Reasons to Live in Spain”, which was something that he has wondered about in the past.  He states that he doesn’t think that he had previously mentioned his interest in Spain, but it is hard to really keep track of what previous data Google really has checked.

I found this article especially interesting because until recently for the most part Google has been the unchallenged superior in the search engine business.  But as mentioned in class Google is way more than just a search engine, it provides powerful tools for users such as Gmail, Google Docs, and of course advertising space for pay.  One of the reason why it is almost impossible for Bing to compete with Google is because Google has massive amounts of data about all of their users.  While in class we discuss PageRank but in reality the algorithm that Google uses also considers in more than just the linkage of different webpages on the internet, it takes into account the content of our Gmail accounts, and our very long history of searching on Google.  While PageRank is a heavy factor in the algorithm, the algorithm is way more complicated than the simplistic version explained in class.  How could Bing possibly compete when Google has such an advantage.  It will be interesting to see the future of Bing.

Bing has always competed with Google but they didn’t go that far. They almost copied the features of Google but it didn’t work. But what I love about Bing and Microsoft (it’s maker) is their never ending confidence to fight. They have been on top and they will do all means to be back on top.
