According to a study conducted by the University of Maryland, just breathing out is the only contact needed to spread the flu virus. It was found within the first hours of illness infected individuals produce aerosols, tiny droplets that suspend in the air for long periods of time. Prior to this, the average person believed the virus was spread through coughing and sneezing. The study states that the best way to prevent the flu from spreading is to immediately go home. This study can help improve computer models of the spread of disease.
This pertains to the lesson we learned the day before the break on game theory and the spread of contagious disease. It suggests that when placed in contact with anyone infected you have a chance of spreading the disease. We discussed how if patient 0 were to contain themselves it would stop the disease from spreading, and this study confirmed that idea. It also confirmed how powerful the network of disease is, solely being in the presence of a sick individual will increase your probability of getting sick. The best way to stop the spread of disease is to keep infected individuals isolated because if they interact with anyone in that person’s network is also exposed.
