According to the article, there are about 3.8 million search queries everyday, and Google uses a search algorithm to collect and arrange results on these search. The rankings of these search results are subjective and favors bigger companies than smaller companies. The page rank algorithm was supposed to be objective and mechanical in terms of measuring the interest and the attention of the webpage. This algorithm has been updated, and the current page rank algorithm ranks the page by its “freshness”, which gives preferences to the newest content that is related to the search, and the location of the user. If the user searches for a place, then the algorithm will rank the result by its location from closest to farthest.
This page rank algorithm is far more complicated than the basic algorithm that we learned in class. The basic model updates the score based on how many pages are linking to it, but for Google’s new algorithm, it keeps track of things like ads, time of the publication, location, and many other factors in addition to linking to the pages.
