KANZI & NYOTA

Kanzi (born in 1983) is the most famous bonobo, whose fame mainly derived from the outstanding linguistic abilities he first developed in the decade-long experiment led by Sue Savage-Rumbaugh. His nephew Nyota (born in 1998) was also raised in Savage-Rumbaugh’s lab and has acquired high-level symbolic competences. Both bonobos are living in the Ape Initiative Lab, located near Des Moines, IA. Both Kanzi and Nyota are artists in a pilot project led by Laurent Dubreuil with the Humanities Lab.
