Cooking with Kids: Safety First

In our Kids in the Kitchen post, we talked about the many benefits of engaging kids in the kitchen. For kids, getting involved in the process of preparing food can help them develop new life skills, learn about healthy eating choices, and also give them the opportunity to learn about and to try new foods. For parents, cooking with kids provides an opportunity to bond with kids and makes the process of cooking more fun and enjoyable.

In this post, we are going to talk about some safety tips to help you get started.

Safety First

  • Start by washing your hands with warm soapy water
  • Tie long hair back
  • Clean all cooking surfaces before you start
  • Teach kids about food safety basics (refer to our posts on Food Safety Basics and Food Handling Safety for more information)
  • Demonstrate before assigning tasks
  • Supervise and monitor kids while cooking and using sharp tools

Another important safety tip is to assign age-appropriate kitchen tasks. The skills and abilities of children tend to vary, even within the same age range. As a result, age-appropriate tasks might be different for each child. For the next few posts, we are going to present some general examples of simple kitchen tasks for different age groups. Use your own knowledge of your children to assign kitchen tasks that suit their skills. While younger children require close attention, remember to also keep an eye on the older children and assist as needed.
