Diabetes Details

In our previous post, “Defining Diabetes”, we talked about the different types of diabetes. In this post, we will share more information about managing diabetes.

Pre-diabetes

Pre-diabetes is reversible. It is a condition where blood sugar levels are higher than normal, but can be managed with weight loss, a healthy diet, and regular exercise.

Type 1 & Type 2

Management of Type 1 diabetes includes insulin therapy. It is critical to keep your blood sugar levels within a target range. Those with Type 1 get insulin via an insulin pen or pump. People with this form of diabetes may need to monitor their blood sugar levels multiple times a day. Management of Type 1 diabetes also includes monitoring carbohydrates, having a low-fat and low-carbohydrate diet, and exercising.

For Type 2 diabetes, management includes weight loss, a balanced diet and at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise a week. Some people may also need medications to keep their blood sugar levels low; with this, it is important to couple meals with medications and to eat the recommended serving size of carbohydrates.

Gestational

For gestational diabetes, management includes a healthy diet, exercise, and close monitoring with the physician to ensure that mom and baby are healthy. Medication is needed if blood sugar is too high.

It can be helpful to talk to your doctor and dietitian about which form of management is best for you. Check out our post “Dining with Diabetes” for more information on eating well.
