Defining Diabetes

Diabetes has been a hot topic in health in the United States. To date, around 30 million Americans have a form of diabetes. You may have heard people describe their condition as having “high blood sugar”. In general, diabetes is a condition when the body cannot use sugar normally. Glucose is the type of sugar that the body uses as an energy source.

There are many types of diabetes and terms used to describe this condition and in recognition of World Diabetes Day, we will touch on each form of diabetes. Below is a list of the different types of diabetes and their symptoms.

It is important to note that 1 in 3 people with diabetes may be un-diagnosed. Being aware of your numbers and prevention strategies are important to lower the risk of getting complications from diabetes. If you are concerned, check in with your doctor.
