Spice It Up!

There are so many foods that are jam-packed with flavor! But sometimes you may want some change and to try new flavors and recipes. A way to add more flavors in your meals is to add more spices to your cupboard!

Spices are a great way to add flavor to your food without adding more salt, fat, or sugar to it. If you are a starter or might not know if you have enough spices ready, here is a good list to have to start.

  • Cumin
    • Cumin has a nutty, earthy taste
    • It is popular in stews, soups, and chilis
    • Try this recipe!
  • Cinnamon
    • Cinnamon is a great spice to add a sweet/spicy taste to food.
    • It works well in desserts and savory dishes
    • A way to use this would be to add some flavor to mashed sweet potatoes or oatmeal!
  • Garlic powder
    • Garlic powder is great to enhance the flavor of  a dish
    • It can go well when seasoning your chicken and veggies!
  • Cayenne pepper
    • Cayenne pepper adds some heat to your dishes
    • It can work in a variety of recipes like tacos, chilis, turkey burgers, and the list goes on!
  • Paprika
    • Paprika can bring a smoky flavor with a hint of hot-spicy taste
    • This can work well in a chicken marinade
  • Clove
    • Clove has a sweet flavor to it
    • It can be used in a curry or some desserts to add a sweet spicy taste to it
  • Nutmeg
    • Nutmeg brings a nutty, cinnamon-like taste to foods!
    • This can work in a squash soup or in certain drinks like eggnog

Spices are great to liven up a dish and have the great benefit of a longer shelf life compared to their fresh counterparts. Some grocery stores even sell them in bulk so you can buy a small amount, try it out, and see if you would want to keep it in your cupboard.
