MyPlate for Your Plate

Have you seen this picture before? MyPlate is a tool created by the United States Department of Agriculture to help us visualize our plate goals each meal. The tool comes from the Dietary Guidelines, a set of evidence-based recommendations to help us achieve our healthiest selves.

MyPlate features five major food groups that we should eat: high protein foods, grains, vegetables, fruit and dairy. Generally, we should aim to get foods from each of these food groups throughout the day:

 

Remember that there is no one way to eat. To get started on your own plate, Get Your MyPlate Plan! To get your MyPlate Plan, start by entering in your information (age, height, weight, etc.).

When you get your estimated calorie need, click on the calories to get your personalized plan! My plan looks like this:

Design your plates throughout the day to look like MyPlate. Aim to meet the food group servings listed for you and keep within your calorie needs.

For example, my breakfast included: two scrambled eggs, a slice of whole-wheat toast and a green smoothie made with low-fat milk, spinach, bananas and strawberries!
