Tesla’s Cybertruck Technology Adoption

Last week, Tesla Inc. unveiled the newest vehicle to its lineup – the Cybertruck. Starting at $39000, its prices are competitive with other trucks on the market like the ever-so-popular Ford F150. With great mileage and power, the Cybertruck is among the best at its pricepoint. However, one big critique about the Cybertruck is its design. The truck is grey, blunt, and looks very futuristic with its sharp edges and corners. Many have criticized it saying its appearance is hideous, but a part of that could be that the design is a new take on the current line of pickup trucks.

What is interesting to track will be the amount of buyers for this new pickup truck. Many believe that it will not best current top-selling trucks. But there is no doubt a niche that are enthusiastic about the design of the Cybertruck. The question then becomes: how big is that niche and can it spread to the greater population. We can think of the niche as a group of people who like the design of the truck, and we want to predict whether initial buyers will exceed a threshold and spread to another group of people outside the niche and eventually gain many adopters. Method of dispersion could be word of mouth – people telling others how great the truck is, or perhaps the new design model will evolve significantly and the Cybertruck will be seen has more favorable. Tesla CEO Elon Musk recently twitted out that the Cybertruck has already received 200,000 orders which seems like a substantial amount. Whether that is enough to convince non-niche buyers to buy it, we will just have to see.
