Celebrating Jacob, Justin, Josh, and Jeremie’s Contributions at Botany 2024!

Congratulations to Jacob, Justin, Josh, and Jeremie for their outstanding presentations at the Botany 2024 Conference in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Jacob delivered a talk titled Comparative genomics of Calochortus Pursh. with an emphasis on the evolution of floral syndromes and served as a panelist in the Careers in Botany luncheon.

Justin presented a talk on Redefining evolutionary paradigms: exploring the constructive evolutionary potential of hybridization using case studies from Araceae.

Josh shared insights in his talk Capture the SNP: Suggestions from in-silico capture on sequencing for demographic parameters.

Our visiting PhD student, Jeremie, contributed with a poster titled Untangling the diversity and evolution of hairsedges (Bulbostylis, Cyperaceae) in Africa.

Julianna presents at the Mycological Society of America conference!

Kudos to Julianna who recently attended the Mycological Society of America conference in Markham, Ontario, Canada! This year, Julianna was the recipient of the MSA Interchange Invitee Award which provided funds to attend the conference. She presented a poster titled Exploring the Microfungal Diversity of Impatiens marianae at Las Cruces Biological Station in Costa Rica.

We (well, Calochortus tolmiei to be exact) got the cover of PNAS!! Congratulations to Nisa Karimi for being the first author on this paper that represents a collaboration between Tom Givnish and his research group, Suzy Stricker (now at the Chicago Botanic Gardens), and the Specht lab, including Jacob Landis, Carrie Tribble, Adriana Hernandez and Chelsea Specht.

Queens of the Lab!!!

The Specht Lab is excited to celebrate the career accomplishments of Dr. Heather Phillips (seated, left) and HHMI Gilliam Fellow Ayress Grinage (seated, right).

Lab Queens

Heather was offered and accepted a postdoc position with José Dinneny at Stanford University where she’ll be part of a team working on a grant from the Templeton Foundation to functionalize ‘omics level understanding of plant biodiversity by deploying species that can be used as research models from across the plant tree of life, combining genomic data with phenotyping, genotyping, and gene editing capabilities.  Meanwhile, Ayress was offered the position of Palm Biologist at the Montgomery Botanical Center in Miami Florida, enabling her to continue to “speak for the palms” through botanical exploration, research, cultivation, conservation, and outreach.  Ayress will be completing her dissertation on phylogenetics and biogeography of the palm genus Sabal and population dynamics of the Sabal minor complex later this spring.

Congratulations to both Heather and Ayress!!!
