A New Way to Rank Pages?

Search engines face a difficult problem: how to give users the best search results, often from little input. PageRank has been an effective solution to this problem, but is there an even better way? Google, which used PageRank to sort its search results until 2013, has adopted a new way of ranking search results: trust flow.

In short, it determines the quality of a site based on the quality of its links with other related sites. As a result, there is a greater emphasis on how reliable and trustworthy the sites it links to are. For example, a site that links to Wikipedia, a site where anybody can edit the information, would no longer raise its search rank as much as it did while Google was using PageRank.

This is related to PageRank, which we discussed in lecture. While this article does not focus on PageRank specifically, it notes the differences from and weaknesses compared to trust flow.
