Herpes: either you do or you don’t (but, you probably do)

The Sexually transmitted disease known as genital herpes is derived from two different viruses: Herpes simplex 1 and herpes simplex 2. Unprotected sex and the exchange of bodily fluids can effectively spread the disease. Furthermore, the disconcerting truth is that the virus can be spread with skin to skin contact, if the person transmitting the virus has an open sore. In the Vice News article titled “You likely have herpes and You Almost Definitely Don’t Know It”, the topic of the herpes simplex virus transmission is discussed. According to the World Health Organization, HSV-2 strain (genital ulcers) increases the risk of contracting HIV. The Herpes virus is a lifelong infection, with no known cure, that can go through dormant periods after an initial outbreak. Likewise, 417 million people ranging from the ages of 15-50 are already infected with HSV-2. The infected individuals definitely are part of a large network of people. The transmission of this infection is essentially a cascade.

In lecture, we learned about the spread of diseases, where the node of origin, patient zero, transmits the disease to other nodes in a ‘contact network.’ There is always a chance that the disease will effectively transmit and spread to other nodes, where a positive R° value signifies a disease persisting indefinitely. This relates to the article because there are susceptible groups, such as the younger generation. The World Health organization report that 2/3 of the world’s population under the age of 50 have contracted the first strain of the virus (cold sores on mouth). Furthermore, there are infectious people that will continue to spread the disease unbeknownst to them. Removed hosts are those that have effectively sought out treatment, such as the antiviral drug Valtrex. Another side point is that infected hosts can spread the disease to their children, if they are untested and unaware of their status of infection. In turn, the scope of the disease is virtually everywhere. This can be troubling in a college environment, as festivities and sharing of beverages can increase the incidence of transmission.
