Palantir Technologies is a company that produces two software platforms: Palantir Government and Palantir Finance. Palantir Government is designed to manage different types of data by allowing the user to organize, search, and view connections between any types of data. It also has built-in privacy and civil liberties protections and it allows users to avoid data mining that may border on civil liberties violations. Palantir Government is used by the FBI, CIA, and the Recovery Accountability and Tranceparency Board. Palantir Finance is a platform designed to analyze financial data in order to develop advanced strategies for trading and asset management. It is used by numerous banks, hedge funds, and financial firms.
Palantir’s software allows users to take large data sets and discover groups of individuals and entities. Within a social network, it can determine the strength of ties between individuals based on the amount of communication between them using any sort of data from phone records to prison visits. Data can be viewed over timeframes to determine how connections change over time or what communications occur at a specific time, such as right before a terrorist attack, to determine which interactions are the most significant in an investigation. The platform is designed to integrate any data set so connections and complex networks can be established in countless ways.
