A new perspective on Google Chrome

I remember when Google Plus was first introduced everyone was quick to set up accounts, for after all, most anything Google has been a part of is wildly successful – Google search engine, YouTube, Gmail, Chrome etc. The quick popularity decline of the seemingly next step in social networking came as a surprise to me. Social networks like Facebook and Twitter connect people by making it even more convenient to interact and form relationships. For example, if your social network contains relationships that violate the Strong Triadic Closure Property, Facebook makes it easy to correct that violation by being able to add “friends of friends” with a click of a button. Google Plus did not inherit these qualities and because of that – there was a strong decline in its use, at least among people I’m connected to.

This article made me see Google Plus in a different light. As opposed to forming edges between nodes in the sense of forming relationships with people, Google Plus can be seen as forming connections between other parts of Google. You can connect your YouTube activity with Google calendar events. I thought this was an interesting way to think about nodes and edges because when I began using Google Plus, I thought the nodes and edges would be similar to Facebook – people and relationships. This idea is new and different and I think that was why it hasn’t hit the ground running yet. We were used to a social network like Facebook because we had MySpace as a backbone, but Google Plus has no equivalent comparison. I am definitely more inclined to give Google Plus a second chance.
